Mercy’s Gourmet Gala

Gary’s House, a program of Mercy Hospital, held its annual Gourmet Gala and “Corporate Chopped Challenge” on April 16 at Ocean Gateway. Over 300 guests attended to sample food from several area restaurants, and enjoy wine and beer from Pine State and Shipyard Brewery. Channel 8 WMTW’s Norm Karkos hosted the event and led the rowdy live auction.
A highlight of the evening was when Mercy’s President and CEO, Eileen Skinner, presented The Inaugural “Forsley Award” to Fred Forsley, Founder of Shipyard Brewing Company, for his outstanding stewardship of the Gary’s House program and his excellence in community support.  Forsley credited his parents and Dr. Louis Ciampi for instilling his values and work ethic. To the room full of his friends and family, Forsley raised a glass of Shipyard to celebrate the night.  Under his leadership, Shipyard has become a household name in Maine.
In a shorter version of the popular television show, “Chopped,” Key Bank bested Bangor Savings Bank, Bank of Maine, and TruChoice Federal Credit Union. They were provided with mystery ingredients from Whole Foods Market.  Judges included Mercy’s President and CEO, Eileen Skinner; Justin Walker, Chef at Earth; Susan Axelrod, Producer at and Phil Coffin of Lambert & Coffin, winners of last year’s Corporate Chop.

The Gourmet Gala is a culinary event to benefit Gary’s House, Mercy Hospital’s home away from home for families with a hospitalized loved one.  Named after Gary Pike, the home is a tribute to this young man’s final wish before succumbing to cancer at just 21 years old.
