Mercy and Portland Area Healthcare Providers Offer Free Skin Cancer Screenings

Mercy Oncology-Hematology, in collaboration with Southern Maine Health Care and Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute, is offering free skin cancer screenings to qualified patients. If you or a loved one are uninsured or underinsured and have freckles, sunburn easily or have a family of skin cancer, you should be screened. All screening locations will host free events in May – the month dedicated to Skin Cancer Awareness.

“We encourage members of our community to take advantage of this opportunity and get screened for skin cancer at no cost,” explains Dawn MacFarland, RNc, BSN, MSM, practice manager of Mercy Hematology-Oncology.  “It is imperative that skin cancer be caught early to avoid further complication or growth.  If we find something of concern, we will address it right away.”  Each patient will be visually screened by a dermatologist to identify any areas of concern and provide prevention tips.
Appointments are still available at each location.  All screenings will take place between 6:00pm and 8:00pm at the following dates and locations:
    • South Maine Health Care, 13 Industrial Park Road, Saco, ME on Wednesday, May 13
    • Mercy Oncology-Hematology Center, 195 Fore River Parkway, Suite 360, Portland, ME on Tuesday, May 19
    • Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute, 100 Campus Drive, Suite 121, Scarborough, ME on Thursday, May 21.
Preference is given to patients who have never been screened by a dermatologist or to those who are underinsured.  Interpreter service is available.
