Volunteering at Mercy

Volunteers at Mercy all share one common desire - to help and to give of themselves. For many, it is simply being a friend, sharing a talent, lending a hand with paper work, or talking with a patient.

More than 350 volunteers give service to Mercy each year, and there's always room for another caring heart. Our requirements are simple. As representatives of Mercy, we ask that all volunteers adhere to the same high professional standards expected from our employees which include:

  • Maintaining a high degree of patient confidentiality, including refraining from talking about patients and their illnesses or conditions. The patient's right to privacy is an essential, critical right demanded by our profession. We also ask that volunteers not seek professional advice from the staff.

  • Wearing a volunteer uniform and photo name badge at all times. This identifies each volunteer as a Mercy associate.

  • Making a specific commitment of time, generally a minimum of three hours, one day a week. This may vary according to the particular volunteer placement. Flexibility in scheduling is available for vacations and special leaves of absence.

In return, we offer a variety of rewards (in addition to that satisfied feeling of knowing you helped!), including:

  • A meal allowance in our cafeteria
  • Free parking
  • Potential tax deduction for mileage
  • Free uniform and photo ID badge
  • A mandatory TB test as well as free flu shots each fall
  • Membership in the Medical Services Federal Credit Union for those who wish to join
  • Access to our Health Sciences Library
  • A warm welcome at all Mercy social events, such as dances, raffles, food sales and picnics

Our manager of volunteer services interviews prospective volunteers and searches for the right individual to fill a particular need. Find out more about our Volunteer Programs, to see what might be a match for you!
