Fibroid tumors are benign tumors that grow in the uterus. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical alternative to treatments such as hysterectomies and myomectomies.
Approximately 35% of women over the age of 35 experience symptoms of fibroid tumors including bleeding, pain, swelling, infertility and pressure on the bladder. Usually the presence of fibroids is diagnosed during a gynecologic exam and confirmed by ultrasound or MRI.

A follow-up ultrasound is done within 3 months of the embolization, at which time most patients have experienced a decrease or absence of symptoms.
