While undergoing surgery, you can rest assured that our team is working to keep you as comfortable as possible. In addition to our team of Anesthesiologists, our staff includes Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Student Nurse Anesthetists, and Anesthesia Technicians, who work with the most sophisticated pain management equipment.
We are pleased to offer the latest in anesthesiology technology. Currently, Mercy is the only hospital in Maine to use the BIS monitor, an advanced monitoring system that measures brain wave activity compared to the depth of anesthesia.
We work to keep you relaxed and comfortable during surgery.
Monitored Anesthesia Care:
Provides sedation and allays anxiety through the use of intravenous medications. Vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels are continually observed throughout your surgery. By utilizing this type of anesthesia, the patient may be able to bypass the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit and return directly to the Ambulatory Care Unit.
General Anesthesia:
Provides complete unawareness of the surgery. The patient is rendered unconscious, and the anesthetic depth is measured by using sophisticated monitors that record brain wave activity.
Regional Anesthesia:
Uses local anesthetics to numb specific parts of the body. This eliminates painful stimuli, so that the patient is comfortable throughout the operation. Intravenous sedation is used as needed, and the level of awareness can be adjusted accordingly.
We help control your pain after surgery
Pain Control Management
The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, or Recovery Room, is staffed with Registered Nurses who continue to monitor your vital signs during your immediate recuperation. These nurses may initiate the use of special, self-administered, post-operative pain control infusions, or they may provide specialized pumps for regulating pain by the epidural administration of medicines.
Chronic Pain Clinic
Staffed by anesthesiologists and nurses, our clinic specializes in caring for patients with issue related to long-term pain management.
