Our oncology nurses are coordinators of care
Working with other cancer care providers and our health team members, our oncology nurses provide a full spectrum of care, from preventative and acute through rehabilitative and palliative. Engaging both patient and family in mutual goal setting, our nurses work to develop a plan of care that helps patients achieve identified goals.
Dawn MacFarland, RN, BSN, OCN

"Nothing is more challenging, rewarding, or life affirming than caring for oncology patients. Our approach to cancer care at Mercy is to treat the whole person, physical, social and spiritual, rather than focusing solely on the disease."
Carolyn Murphy, RN
Staff nurse with more than 6 years of oncology experience.
"I enjoy the challenge of the ever-changing technology in the field of oncology. I believe in caring for the whole person, giving them the knowledge and support needed to regain control of their lives."
Karen Sellner, RN, BSN, OCN
Staff nurse with more than 20 years of oncology experience.
"The most rewarding aspect of oncology nursing is the unique relationship that develops with patients and families. At Mercy Hospital, we encourage patients and their families to be active participants in their care."
Supportive help for patients and their family members
As part of Mercy's "care team" approach, a licensed clinical social worker experienced in working with people who have cancer is available to our patients. She can help patients and their family members with many issues from the need for supportive counseling and stress management to referral to support groups and community resources related to financial, transportation, and housing needs. She is also available to help with advance directives, as well as terminal care and bereavement.
Please feel free to contact the oncology social worker, Lenore Kraus, at (207) 822-2566. She is here to support, educate, assist and advocate for patients in a variety of ways.
If you or a loved one is facing a diagnosis of cancer, call us today and let us show you how we can help.
