Seeing a Vision Come to Life

A Message from the CEO of Mercy Health System of Maine

It’s one thing to envision and plan a new hospital. It’s quite another experience to watch as that vision becomes a reality. In May, Mercy reached another milestone as we celebrated the “topping off” of our new hospital on the Fore River. A topping off ceremony is a tradition within the construction industry that marks the moment the structural steel assembly is complete. That moment was especially meaningful because the last beam that was hoisted into place was covered with the signatures and messages of scores of Mercy supporters.

As I watched the faces of a huge TEAM of people following the beam to its resting place above the Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, I realized that the PROCESS of building our new hospital is just as important as the outcome. My mind flashed back over the past four years. I could see the crucial Board meeting where the decision was made to move ahead. I re-lived the numerous planning presentations and discussions at which Mercy shared project concepts and received feedback. I visualized the Sisters of Mercy and their guidance and prayers all along the way.

A project as big as the Mercy at the Fore Project has many milestones. With each one we reach, Mercy makes a stronger commitment to the Portland community—to serve, to provide excellent health care, to strengthen spirituality, and to assist those in need. Thanks to so many who have helped Mercy in continuing this dynamic mission.
