Disasters can occur gradually over a few days or strike quickly, without warning. It can force you to evacuate to a shelter or confine you to your home.
What would you do if basic services – water, electricity, fuel, phones – were cut off?
What if you couldn't get ahold of the everyday items we all need - food, medicine, maybe pet food or baby formula?
How would you care for someone with special needs?
Local officials and volunteers will be on the scene of a disaster early and throughout the event, but they may not be able to reach everyone immediately. You might not see relief workers for as long as 48-96 hours. How long will you be able to sustain yourself and your family without help?
A few questions to ask yourself before disaster strikes: do you have a pre-assembled emergency kit that you can grab and go quickly? What items should be included in that kit? Do you have cash on hand? What is your plan for your pet?
Depending on when and where the disaster happens, your family could be scattered throughout the community - at work, at school, on a business trip or vacation. You should have a plan in place, a gathering spot or a way to stay in touch if you can't get to the same location.
Now is the time to be thinking, planning and preparing for a local disaster. Advanced preparation is the best protection for you and your family.
