Providing high quality, accessible, compassionate care for more than 90 years

Mercy Health System of Maine (Mercy) includes five dedicated campuses, three of which have inpatient beds (230 beds total). Each campus has a unique focus, but all work together to provide a broad mix of medical, surgical, and outpatient services. In addition, Mercy has a growing number of physician practice sites; offers several community-based programs and partners with the city in running the Portland Community Free Clinic.

Our Mission:

For more than 90 years, Mercy has fulfilled its core mission of carrying out the healing work of Christ by providing clinically excellent, compassionate health care for all, with special concern for the poor and disadvantaged.

Our Commitment to the Community

Mercy is committed to giving back to the greater Portland community. In 2007, Mercy provided nearly $10 million in community benefits, including un-reimbursed medical treatments; pro-bono medical services; community education and prevention outreach. Additionally, Mercy provides funding and medical assistance to the Portland Community Free Clinic. As one of Maine’s largest employers, Mercy attracts more than 1,800 employees, 650 medical staff, and 500 volunteers. Mercy is the first and only hospital to receive the Governor’s Award for Business Excellence, which recognizes Maine businesses that demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to their communities and employees.

Mercy Moving Forward

In September 2008, Mercy opened its new Fore River campus, which includes a new hospital facility and medical office building on a 42-acre site overlooking the Fore River in Portland. Mercy donors contributed more than $16 million to the Mercy at the Fore capital campaign, surpassing the original goal of $15 million. The recent opening of the Fore River campus marks the end of Phase I of a two-phase plan to relocate the entire State Street campus. The Fore River Project helps Mercy ensure its ability to serve the ever-growing health needs of the greater Portland community, reinforcing Mercy's mission of service. The highly visible and easily accessible location of Mercy Fore River also establishes it as a new city landmark. Mercy expects to embark on Phase II within the next few years, and plans to fully relocate well in time for its 100-year anniversary in 2018.
