The Orthopedic and Total Joint Program at Mercy is a comprehensive rehabilitation program dedicated to treating patients with a variety of orthopedic issues including total joint replacement.  Mercy utilizes a multidisciplinary approach before and after surgery to help each patient achieve his/her best possible outcome.

Preoperative:

  • Mercy offers a free preoperative education program, Get Ready for Joint Replacement Surgery, to help you and your family learn how to best prepare for your surgery and learn what to expect before, during, and after your surgery.

Hospital stay:

  •  Inpatient physical and occupational therapy starting the first day after surgery incorporating exercise, gait training and work on activities of daily living to allow you to return home as soon as possible.

After discharge from the hospital:

  • Home health care. A therapist goes to your home, continues the work started in the hospital and helps you continue to make functional gains.

Once able to leave home:

  •  Out patient therapy, such as provided by Mercy Physical Therapy Center, continues to work on strength, range of motion, gait, and overall ability to do the things that you consider important.
