International Medical Equipment Collaborative (IMEC) Response to the Crisis in Haiti
In response to this week’s catastrophic earthquake, IMEC has devised a three part plan to address the health care needs of the people of Haiti. We are immediately seeking equipment and supplies for this effort, specifically:
Equipment: Outpatient, Emergency Care, Surgical, Trauma, Intensive Care, Physical Therapy, and Orthopedic.
Supplies: All General, Surgical, Wound, Maternal and Child, and Critical Care.
Step 1: Beginning this week, provide immediate assistance to stabilize hospitals currently caring for the injured. Many of Haiti’s hospitals and clinics have been destroyed.Hospitals along the Dominican Republic border have already begun treating Haitian patients injured in the earthquake. In collaboration with the government of the Dominican Republic, IMEC will:
Ship medical supplies and equipment to 2 hospitals along the Haitian border:Regional Jaime Hota Hospital, a large hospital in the city of Barahna, and Hospital General Melenciano, a 60-bed hospital in Jimani, DR.Both of these hospitals are currently treating the injured, and are setting up tents to accommodate the growing number of patients.
Immediately send 4 cargo containers of emergency medical supplies and equipment to these hospitals, allowing doctors in the Dominican Republic to continue treating the injured.
Step 2: In coming weeks, reequip hospitals and clinics in Port-Au-Prince and surrounding areas.
As IMEC has done across the globe for the past 15 years, we will provide Haitian hospitals, including hospitals in Port-Au-Prince that we have worked with previously, with medical supplies and equipment that allow doctors to provide care in Haiti itself.
Step 3: Restart Haitian hospitals and clinics.
Once emergency care has been provided and the relief and rescue efforts have stabilized the region, IMEC will continue to support Haiti by helping to restore long term health care stability. In partnership with other humanitarian organizations and the government of Haiti, IMEC will supply reopened Haitian hospitals and clinics with donated equipment from US hospitals. These reopened hospitals and clinics will allow doctors and nurses to not only restore health care, but also improve the standard of care for the people of Haiti.
