Mercy Hospital and the Maine Red Claws have joined together to establish the Best Shot for Youth Initiative, a special effort to give children in grades 6-12 a better shot at staying active, healthy, and safe in their communities. The program will provide students who either do not have a primary care physician at all, or have a Mercy primary care provider, a free school sports physical at one of Mercy's primary care practices.
Funds raised for this initiative will also support the Red Claws in their efforts to improve outdoor basketball courts in local communities and the development of more neighborhood “league” teams for youth. Red Claws team members and local colleges and universities will also be tapped to help provide coaching and mentoring for these community teams.
The primary source of funding for the Best Shot Youth Fund is through the Annual Best Shot tournaments featuring Red Claws players, coaches and staff who will provide assistance and guidance to youth participating in the free-throw basketball event.
We know kids who are involved in sports are healthier and do better in school which makes us a stronger and more productive community.
