The Day Before Surgery
You will be given specific instructions to follow regarding your diet before surgery. As a general rule, you should:
     Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before surgery.
     Not eat any solid food after midnight, including gum and hard candy.
 Clear liquids may be allowed up to four hours before surgery time. Clear liquids include water, clear juices, broth, black tea, and black coffee. They do not include dairy products.

The Day of Surgery
On the day of your surgery, be sure to follow the instructions the nurse gave you for taking a preoperative shower, taking medications, and when to stop eating and drinking. A parent of guardian must accompany minors under the age of 18.You should also:
     Arrive at the scheduled time.
     Bring your insurance card.
     Bring a copy of your advance directive or living will.
     Bring any forms or x-rays that your doctor has given you to bring the day of surgery.
     Wear casual clothing that is comfortable and easy to change.
     Remove make-up, nail polish, and contact lenses.
     Bring a case for you glassed or contact lenses.
     Leave your jewelry, including body piercings, and all personal belongings at home.
     Bring a portable music player with headset, if desired.
     Shower or bathe prior to surgery
     Refrain from wearing perfumes or colognes.

Important
If you develop a cold, fever, or change in your condition during the week before
your surgery, please notify your surgeon.
If you smoke, please stop smoking 48 hours prior to surgery.
