Mammography is a low-level x-ray of the breasts that can detect cancer at its earliest stage. Early detection is a powerful tool in the treatment of breast cancer. The sooner treatment can begin, the better the chances of survival.

CURRENT SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY GUIDELINES

Over 50 years All women over the age of 50 years should have annual mammography examinations.
40-50 years The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women in this age group. The National Cancer Institute recommends that these women get a mammogram every 1-2 years. Your physician should offer appropriate guidance on this issue according to your personal medical history.
Under 40 years Most women under the age of 40 years do not need annual mammograms.

Screening Mammograms
For those with no current breast problems. Screening mammograms can be scheduled with or without a physician referral.

Diagnostic Mammograms
For a follow-up to a screening or for those with a current breast problem. If a screening mammogram indicates a potential problem, your physician will want to schedule you for a more sophisticated test.
